「Ailanthus」とはニワウルシの学名であり、
英名では「Tree of Heaven」――つまり、「神の木」を意味する。
その「神の木」という名前を冠した、Ailanthus Recordingsは
ヴェイパーウェイヴがジャンルとして確立するその前からそれを支持し、
牽引してきたレーベルの一つだ。
過去にはInternet Club、회사AUTO、Luxury Eliteといったアーティストの作品をリリースし、
最近でもTOYOTAセリカ、Lindsheaven Virtual Plazaなど、
その関心は一貫してヴェイパーウェイヴにあるように見える。
しかし、今回ARから作品を発表したDUDES、H | p s、Internet Club、Luxury Elite、회사AUTO
そして、Ailanthus Recordingsにインタビューをした結果、
Ailanthus Recordingsは決してヴェイパーウェイヴにのみ着眼しているわけではなく、
もっと広く大きなものを目指し、探究しており、
かつてヴェイパーウェイヴと呼ばれたアーティストもヴェイパーウェイヴから離れ、
新たな領域へ向かっているその萌芽を感じることができた。
終わりを告げたヴェイパーウェイヴ。その後に一体何が始まるのか。
今後全4回に分けてお送りする、
「神の木」に集う人々のインタビューからそれを感じて取っていただければ幸いである。

Ailanthus Recordings（以下AR）について簡潔に説明していただけますか？
簡潔に？ARは友人同士が刺激し合うハブ的な役割を持っていて、
文化の中心で、何より僕の夢が叶う場所だね。
そして、本当に素晴らしい友人たちの純粋な創作意欲によって実現できている場所だ。
私はヴェイパーウェイヴを通してARを知ったのですが、
実際あなたのレーベルではヴェイパーウェイヴだけでなく、
シューゲイザーやチルウェイヴ、ドローンなど様々なアーティストを扱っていますね。
これだけ様々なアーティストを扱う際に、何を大切にしていますか。
ARでリリースされるに至ったものは2つの異なる事柄に要約できる。
まず1つには僕個人の趣味趣向に合っている、
2つ目はアーティストが彼ら独自のものを実践できていると分かる時だね。
勿論、この中でもある流行が顕著に見られる場合もある。
でも、本当に新しいことを実践しているものを見つけ出すことは
まがいものを見つけ出すことより簡単だと僕は感じるんだ。
ARに属するメンバー全員、その時その場所にしか存在しえないものが本当に独創的なのだ、
ということを知っていることに関してかなり誇りを持っていると僕は思うよ。
ARは長々としたリストにできるほどの
多様な外部からの影響や友人たち同士の相互の繋がり合いなしでは存在しえない。
音楽を特別なものにしているものについて考えた時、
それは音楽をその時に適した方法で提供するということだと僕は思う。
そして、それがARで多様な音楽を提供できている理由ではないかと思うよ。
ARに所属するアーティストの曲を聴くと、何かノスタルジアのようなものを感じます。
ノスタルジアについてはどのように考えていますか。
そうだね、知っての通り、ノスタルジアはこの世代の音楽全体に通ずる明確なテーマだと思う。
僕がノスタルジアに興味がわいたのは、遡るとジェームズ・フェラーロを見つけた2008年の時だね。
フェラーロを見つけたことはやがて一つのインターネット・ムーブメントになっていく
このラビット・ホールに僕を引きづり込み、
沢山の人が僕と同じようなことを言うことができるんだと感じたきっかけの一つだね。
ノスタルジアは今特に顕著に見られていると思う。
それは僕たちがこれからも続いていくようで、気にかけようが、
まるで気にかけていないかのようにすぐ古い慣習になってしまう、
これだけ速度の速い、そして変化の激しい時代に生きているからだ。
僕はそれが若い人々が過去の方法や物事に慰みを見出す理由だと思う。
だって、未来はとてもとてもとても怖いわけだから。
ノスタルジアがレーベルの上でどのような役割を果たしているかについては、
それはアーティスト個々や芸術作品や音楽を通じてそれを伝えているかに依存していると思う。
僕個人としては特別ノスタルジアを探し出しているわけではないよ、
でも、ノスタルジアを持っている男の子や女の子の思いをがっちり掴んでいると思うし、
多分それがこの質問をあなたがしてきた理由なんじゃないかい？（笑）
今どのようなアーティストやレーベルに関心がありますか？
僕はとても広い趣味趣向をもっているからね（笑）
そうだね、今に限って言うなら、
Living Room Visionsのコンピレーションがどうなっているのかはいつも追っている。
そのコンピレーションには沢山のレーベルが参加しているんだ。
ARもそうだし、Sunup Recordingsもそう、
他にもFortune 500, Memory No. 36 Recordings, Illuminated Pathsとかそれ以外にも少しかな。
でも、僕がいつもこのレーベルを運営している人たちの頂点にいる、なんてね（笑）
実際、僕はエコージャム/ヴェイパーウェイヴスタイルの貪欲なフォロワーだよ。
僕はその本当に初めの頃から去年それが終わりを告げるまでずっと愛してきた。
これだけ何かが成長するのを見るのは魅力的なことだしね。
確かに、さっき言ったまがいものが顔を出すこともあるけど、大体の作品は本当に僕の心を打つんだ。
今、僕は実生活で少し面倒なことになっているんだけど、だからこそ、僕はポジティヴであろうとしているよ。
SNCK PCK、Chaz and Alex、そしてMetallic Ghostsは僕の為にいろいろとしてくれているしね。
多分、個人的アルバム・オブ・ザ・イヤーになるだろうと思う회사AUTOの新しいアルバムと
Fortune 500でリリースしたLuxury Eliteのアルバムは最近良く聴いているよ。
今の音楽と同時に、僕は30年代後半から、40年代前半のビッグバンド、
そしてスウィングに親近感を感じている。
AMラジオを聴いて、たくさんのたくさんのテープやレコードを手に入れて、
今僕はこの音楽をとても愛している。本当にリアルな音楽だし、
しかも、自然に聴こえるのに、大抵僕たちが聞くような音楽には全然似ていないんだ。
ビッグバンドやスウィングの時代を経て、どのように音楽が進化したか、
それが今日までどのような影響を与えているか、聴いたら分かると思うよ。
ビッグバンドやスウィングは今まで聴いた中でも一番面白い音楽の一つだ。
だって、凄く分かりやすい音楽だからね。
僕は今までビッグバンドやスウィングを殆ど聴いたことなかったから、
いつも新鮮な感じで聴いているよ。
今後の予定を教えてください。
まず今、第一取り組んでいるのは僕の仕事と人生設計だね。
僕は家族が欲しいし、家も欲しいし、後ろを森が取り囲むような庭が欲しい、
それに安定していて安心できるような職があればいいなあと思うんだ。
それが僕が今まず取り組んでいることだよ。
レーベルに関しては――これがこの質問の要点だと思うのだけど――
さっき言ったことを念頭に置きながら、頑張って続けよう続けようと思っているよ。
ARを通してたくさんの素晴らしい友達を作れたし、今も新しい人に出会えているしね。
こうして作り上げた友人関係はとても気に入っているんだよ。
だから、僕の友人が作ったものに関する限り、僕は力を貸していこうと思う。
将来的にARがどうなるかについて話すのは難しいけど、
あなた方がずっと心からの信頼を以て、僕らに期待してくれれば、
僕らはまた一緒になって作り始めるだろうね。
素晴らしい友達、素晴らしい音楽、素晴らしいアイデア、ポジティヴでたくさんの励まし。

Can you explain Ailanthus Recordings simply?
Simply? Ailanthus Recordings is a hub of friendly inspiration. Ailanthus Recordings is a focal point of culture. Ailanthus Recordings is my dream come true, made possible by the unadulterated creativity of some truly great friends.
I noticed Ailanthus Recordings via Vaporwave, but, in fact, your label released various artists not only Vaporwave, but Shoegaze, Chillwave, Drone. When you manage various artists, what is you think a great deal of?
What gets released on Ailanthus really boils down to two different things; the first is my personal taste and second is when I can tell that an artist is really doing their own thing. Sure, there are certain trends that are clearly observable within this community, but I feel like it's easy to weed out the ones really trying something new as compared to something inauthentic. I think that all of us at Ailanthus Recordings can take a great deal of pride in knowing that we are a part of something that only exists in this one place at this one time, it's unique! Ailanthus Recordings would not exist without a laundry-list of external influences and friendly interactions. I think about what makes a piece of music special, what it means to be presented a certain way at a certain time, and that's why we are able to offer the abundant variety of music that we do.
When I listened songs of Ailanthus Recordings's artists, I feel some kind of nostalgia. How do you think about nostalgia.
Well, you know, nostalgia is the clear theme of this entire generation of music in general. I began my interest in nostalgia when I discovered Ferraro back in 2008, it was part of what lead me into this rabbit hole that would eventually become the entire Internet movement and I feel that a lot of people can say the same thing. Nostalgia is especially prominent right now, because we are in a time of such rapid growth and change, we are expected to keep up and drop the old ways like they never mattered, well they did matter, and I think that's why a lot of young people find solace in the ways of the past, because the future is very very very scary. As for nostalgia on the label, I really feel that it just depends on the artist themselves and what they are conveying through their art and music. I don't specifically seek out nostalgia, but I've got my guys and girls that have nostalgia on lock and that's probably why you were able to ask me this question : )
What artists and labels you pay attention now?
I've got a pretty wide range of taste haha, but i'd say NOW, I mean, I always follow what's going on within the Living Room Visions collective. A lot of labels operate out of that collective. Ailanthus does, as does Sunup Recordings, Fortune 500, Memory No. 36 Recordings, Illuminated Paths and a handful more but I'm always on top of those guys ^ ^ ^ I'm an avid follower of the entire Eccojam/Vaporwave style, I have loved it since the very beginning and it's just taken a life of it's own over the past year, it's fascinating what watch something grow like this. There's some meh stuff that comes out (see: paragraph 1 'Inauthentic') but the majority of it really just always hits my spot. I'm in a bit of a complicated IRL situation right now, so I've been trying to keep positive, SNCK PCK, Chaz and Alex and Metallic Ghosts are really doing that for me right now. That new 회사AUTO album that just came out might just be Album of the Year, there's also a new Luxury Elite on F500 that's i've been listening to a lot. Aside from all of those current things, I've developed a deep affinity for late 30's - early 40's Big Band and Swing music, I listen on AM radio, have dozens and dozens of tapes and records, I just love the stuff, it's so real, and so unlike everything that we typically listen to, yet it feels so natural. You can see how music evolved after that era and what influence it had even to today. I think it is some of the most interesting music I've ever heard in my life, and because it's so specific, I've never heard the majority of it in my life, so it's like I'm always listening to something brand new.
What do you plan in future.
My number one focus is my career and life right now. I want to have a family, a home, a yard with a forest behind it and a career that could finally offer me stability and security. That's my main focus in life right now. As for the label, which I'm sure was the point of this question; based on what I said above, I'm just gonna keep on keeping on, I have so many great friends through this, and have met so many people, I'm meeting new people all of the time. That's my favorite part about all of this is the friendships that develop. So, as long as my friends create, I will curate. It's hard to say what the future holds for Ailanthus, but you can keep counting on the reliable heartfelt approach, we've come to create together. Great friends, great music, great ideas, positivity and collective encouragement. That's what we'll always offer.
